Team GATV Roundtable: Talking Arrow Season 6 So Far
Opinion January 18, 2018 Craig Byrne
Do you have an opinion on how much longer the series should go?
CRAIG: As long as Jensen and Jared want to do it. Oh wait, wrong show. Really, I’m happy with the show continuing as long as Stephen Amell and the producers want to do it. Arrow has had ups and downs, but every down has gone back up. I absolutely want a Season 7, and if there are stories to go beyond that, bring them on.
STEPHANIE: I think it’s possible for the series to run for another couple of years, but I also think it needs to find a way to reinvent itself to prevent recycled storylines and stop the seasons and episodes from continuing to blend together. I’m not proposing that Arrow pull a Once Upon A Time and lose half their main cast members, but rather something more along the lines of making a definitive decision about what to do with the flashbacks (flashforwards?) and create a present day storyline that doesn’t rely on the audience being familiar with what came before.
MELISSA: I’m pragmatic about it. I can see reasons for ending it after the seventh season and also for sticking around indefinitely. If it ended next year, it would likely guarantee the show preserving all the things I currently love about it. I recall how vastly different Smallville became between its 7th and 10th season. I grew to hate the lead character in those seasons, so the unknown of the show just continuing to chug on without an end in sight brings me some apprehension.
On the other hand, I would hate for the rest of the Arrowverse to keep going on without Arrow actually being around. Plus, it’s just as likely for Arrow to continue being true to what it’s become, in which case, I’d hate to miss out on comes next.
I think it’s a safe bet to say Arrow is not going away anytime soon.
MATT: If they can pivot and find something to shake up the status quo and not keep hitting the same plot points, I can see them go on for another season or two or three. But I’m also a firm believer in not keeping a TV show on the air just to keep it on the air. You might find some creative nuggets here and there, and it’s great to keep people employed long-term, but you lose the agency of the show and it eventually become background noise. I’ve just started re-watching ER on Hulu, and I can recall there were years when I was intently following the show. I also recall the last few years when you would be shocked to remember that the series was still on the air. I’m looking at a series like Supernatural. There hasn’t been significantly new covered ground on the show for years. I understand it has a solid fanbase, but it certainly doesn’t feel like a show I have to rush to see any longer. I can recall the arguments made against Smallville being on the air for maybe two seasons too long. At some point, you start to overstay your welcome. I hope Arrow can find its time to gracefully bow out.
